ALOR SETAR: A freak storm blew off the rooftops of eight houses in a village in Pendang.
Villagers said dark clouds appeared at about 4pm over Kampung Alor Besar, Mukim Ayer Putih, about 25km from here.
While it only rained lightly, strong winds blew off the rooftops and uprooted several trees and electricity poles collapsed, hitting several houses. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident.
A motorist passing by on the North-South Expressway managed to record a video of a twister at the village.
Loh Chin Seong, 43, who was driving from Pendang to Alor Setar, said he saw the twister blowing through a padi field.
“I used my handphone to record the unusual scene. I also took a few pictures of the twister,” he said.
Pendang Civil Defence Department officer Norashikin Ahmad Zawawi said the strong winds damaged the roofs of eight houses.
“About 40 villagers were affected, and they have been temporarily moved to their relatives’ homes,” she said.
She said the sky was dark during the storm but there was little rain.
“The winds, however, were very strong,” she added.
