News: Relief centres open in flood-hit Johor

JOHOR BARU: An overnight downpour caused flash floods in several areas in the state, prompting five flood relief centres to be opened.
State Johor Welfare Department director Khadijah Abdullah said that as of 6.30pm yesterday, 1,328 victims from 289 families were affected.
“Two centres were opened in Johor Baru and three in Kota Tinggi,” she said yesterday.
She said Kota Tinggi was the worst affected area with 819 victims from 168 families while the remaining 121 families were from Johor Baru.
Khadijah added that the victims included four disabled people, 66 senior citizens and 514 children and babies.
“The affected places are Kampung Sepakat Baru and Kampung Sungai Tiram in Johor Baru while areas affected in Kota Tinggi are PPMS Kampung Baru Teluk Ramunia, Pengerang, Kampung Baru Sungai Mas, Penawar Taman Aman, Taman Mawai and Johor Lama,” she said.
She added that the flood relief centres were SK Batu 10 and Batu 18 Sungai Tiram, PPMS Kampung Baru Teluk Ramunia multi-purpose hall, Kampung Baru Sungai Mas multi-purpose hall and Kota Kecil multi-purpose hall.
Khadijah also mentioned that all basic necessities like mats, towels, blankets and food supply have been sent to the relief centres.
Department personnel have been stationed at the centres to monitor the situation.
Meanwhile, Gelang Patah MCA division chief Jason Teoh said they had distributed food and mineral water to the flood victims in Kampung Laut in the morning.
“We are ready to assist the Welfare Department in any way we can,” he said, adding that Nusajaya assemblyman Datuk Aziz Sapian and Johor Baru district officer Amran A. Rahman also visited the victims at the relief centre.
