News: Embankment collapses at Bukit Setiawangsa, residents forced to vacate homes

The Star, 29 Dec 2012

KUALA LUMPUR: Residents of Bukit Setiawangsa here were rudely shocked late Friday when land erosion caused most part of a 43m concrete embankment in the area to collapse.

The concrete barrier suddenly crumbled and buried the only access road from Taman Puncak Setiawangsa at about 10pm.

Until past midnight, the soil in the area had yet to stabilise and the area was classified as a critical zone, forcing occupants of four luxury bungalow houses near the collapsed barrier to vacate their homes.

It is learnt that among the residents involved were an MP and the family of a diplomat.

Puncak Setiawangsa residents’ association assistant chairman Fauziah Jamaluddin said only the residents of Jalan Puncak 2 were affected and they were ordered to vacate as soon as possible.

“Some 15 luxury houses were affected while 200 other houses were not affected,” she said.

No injuries or casualties were reported from the incident.

Meanwhile, according to Bernama, the Fire and Rescue Department and police have asked the affected residents to vacate their homes and take their documents and essential items with them, and move their vehicles to a safe location.

Resident B. Selvarani, 26, said she heard a landslide behind her terrace house below the embankment.

“The fallen soil almost entered my house,” said Selvarani, who was doing her laundry then and immediately vacated the house with her family of four.
