FLOODS caused by incessant rain in the past week caused losses of up to RM800,000 to 56 Indian farmers at Kampung Johan Setia in Teluk Panglima Garang, reported Makkal Osai.
Malaysian Indian Farmers Association president P.T. Sivakanthan said the failure by the relevant authorities to deepen the irrigation canal in the area had contributed to the problem.
He said the floods damaged most of the crop planted by the farmers on their 40ha farms.
The problem, he said, was further compounded by the failure to open the floodgates during the rainy season, causing water to overflow into the fields and destroying most of the crops.
Sivakanthan said he had raised the issue with the state Drainage and Irrigation Department several times before but still the problem was not addressed.
